Vertiv: more of the sales growth is reaching operating profit.

Q2 results · 29 Jul 2026 · Reviewed 20 Oct 2026
Q2 2026 ended 30 June 2026 · Initial qualitative assessment

Q2 net sales rose 24.1% year on year, while GAAP operating margin improved to 19.5% from 16.8%. That strengthens the execution case for its data-centre infrastructure business. Sustaining those economics is more important than one quarter’s cash surge.

Counterpoint: Working-capital and customer-payment timing can boost cash flow temporarily; expansion also requires capital.

Arrows assess business evidence, not share-price direction.

The investment question

A powerful chip still needs a working building.

The AI investment story extends well beyond the processors inside a rack. Electricity has to arrive reliably, heat has to leave, and complex installations have to work as a system. Vertiv sells into that physical layer of computing, with power, cooling and related infrastructure and services.

That gives it a distinctive position in our research universe. The positive case does not require us to choose the winning AI application. It depends on the infrastructure customers actually build—and on Vertiv’s ability to supply it profitably. The opportunity is tangible, but so are the factories, installation schedules and working-capital demands required to capture it.

Operating profit is outpacing sales growth.

Q2 2025

The operating evidence

Profit is growing faster than sales.

Second-quarter net sales were $3.274 billion, up 24.1% from a year earlier. GAAP operating profit increased from $442.4 million to $637.9 million, a 44.2% gain. Those figures imply an operating margin of approximately 19.5%, compared with 16.8% a year earlier.

For us, the encouraging signal is the gap between sales growth and profit growth. If a supplier keeps a larger proportion of each sales dollar while expanding, its investment case becomes more substantial than a demand forecast alone. The next task is to determine how repeatable that improvement is as product mix, capacity and project complexity change.

Management attributed Q2 progress to execution, productivity and favourable pricing relative to costs. It also described some shipment timing shifts associated with supply-chain congestion and phased projects. That combination is a reminder that strong demand and smooth quarterly delivery are different things.

The infrastructure opportunity

Higher-density computing changes the equipment around it.

Vertiv’s AI reference designs span both air-cooled and combined liquid-and-air-cooled configurations. Its range also covers power distribution, backup power and services. This breadth offers several possible points of participation in a data-centre deployment, rather than exposure to one component alone.

Our inference is that technical integration can become more valuable as a project becomes harder to design and commission. Customers need equipment that works together and support when operating conditions change. For Vertiv, the attractive outcome would be to convert that need into durable relationships and service opportunities, while keeping manufacturing and delivery costs under control. A large addressable opportunity still has to become a profitable order.

Cash and the next checkpoint

The cash result deserves a closer look.

Operating cash flow reached $1.10 billion in Q2. The half-year filing shows a significant contribution from working-capital movements, particularly deferred revenue. Cash received ahead of delivery strengthens liquidity, but it also accompanies obligations to do the work. We would not treat a strong collection period as a permanent quarterly run rate.

Vertiv plans to report Q3 results on 28 October 2026 before the U.S. market opens. At our 20 October review date, the next report is still ahead. We will watch delivery execution, margins and cash conversion together: the strongest evidence would be progress across all three rather than a headline order or sales number in isolation.

Investor Espresso · Forward view

Our bullish case: become indispensable to the build-out.

If AI infrastructure investment continues and Vertiv scales capacity without sacrificing profitability, earnings could grow faster than revenue. Reliable delivery and a larger service relationship would strengthen that scenario. Q2 provides encouraging evidence, while leaving plenty for subsequent results to prove.

Our base interpretation is that execution remains the decisive variable. A good industry position does not remove the effects of project delays, cost inflation or the valuation investors pay. The business can improve while its shares disappoint if expectations have moved too far ahead.
